Olney 7s
Too
little too late should be the byword for this years Olney 7s. We started
poorly with a defeat and thing did not get much better, the team kept taking
the ball in contact and getting turned over. Even the injection of pace from
the club captain arriving late couldn't help. However the new O'Sullivan
Project Management Ltd branded kit turned up from Stash. The first game in
the new kit went badly as we lost to the eventual winner. The last game we
went down 24 nil before finding our 7s feet in the last few minutes and
scoring 3 times and only denied of a last minute win by some poor hands.
Romford 7s
What a difference turning up with a full
squad makes, also playing in a pool of 6!! We started well with a win over
Old Colfeians which would be there only defeat of the day (they won the
cup!!). Then followed a win over a Old Brentwoods and a social team meant we
were going well. Then the wheels fell off against the Hollywood 7s team who
were favourites to win and certainly looked the part. Soon after that we
played the Amlin team and with confidence dented we didn't perform and lost by
one try. Were put into the plate where we received a bye to the final.
Having had a chance to see our opposition we knew they were quite good. But
with two quick tries the team confidence was back and we finished strongly to
stroll away with the Plate. Well done chaps. Squad: Harps, Richard Bunton
(both RBS), Tom England, James Hardy, Dr Dave, Stealth, Steve-O (Sidcup),
Gower (Footscray), Dr Dave's Brother (Gravesend), Richard Clarke (ex-
Worthing).
Interdean 7s
There was a great expectation a full squad of
10 with pace and power a plenty, however in the last 24 hours 4 players
dropped out and it ended up 6 players and the RBS Club Captain. The first
game out was against the Cup Winners - The Church full of Kiwis and
Islanders,- we lost, then another defeat to the losing plate finalists meant
we had to win against Wasps Academy which although we pushed them hard we
couldn't do losing by one try. There was a thought about leaving as the rain
came down but after a reflection beer we decided to finish the season on a
high and destroyed the Dislocators 42-5. Thanks to all the lads who played
the season including the core they played every tournament: Gower, Harps, Jim,
Steve, Dr Dave. Also a huge thanks to Jerry for sponsoring the new kit and
providing the beers that allowed me to bribe the team to go out on a high
despite injuries.
Cheers chaps an improvement on last season and much fun had.

Plate Winners
A first run out for the The RBS Gun Runners on a rainy cloudy
Sunday took them to Dover. Usually motivational speaking is used before the
games or at half time, this time it was used to get the team into the cars and
down the A2, even then more was needed when the weather looked bad. Once we
turned up it appears a few team hadn’t motivated as we did and they must have
stayed in nice warm bed and watched the grand prix.
The
tournament started with a straight knock out unfortunately we drew Dover 1st
team in the first game of the day. We went behind after some strong running but
fought hard and got a try for our efforts however went down 21-7. That put us
into the plate where we met Ashford Saracens after a couple of training sessions
the hands started to warm up and we put them down fairly easily to move to the
plate semi-final where we met a very good Folkestone outfit who ended up in the
plate despite winning their opening games. Total devastation ensued, beaten for
pace on the outside, tackles bust out of, previous calm turned into havoc and in
the last 5 minutes 4 tries where shipped.... Folkestone were very upset a Kent
Merit table team had sent the home "tae think again" as the Scottish contingent
said; RBS 40 Folkestone a lucky 7.
So we were
into the final against Ashford 1st, a big physical outfit with some good pace
men out wide. The tactic was to use the ball and retain possession to tire the
chasing players. However straight from the kick off their the big lads charged
forwards and scored despite good challenges going in, to make matters worse our
8 man squad was reduced to 7 when our scrum half was knocked out. Things looked
bad but the team stuck to the tactic and slowly gaps appeared and we started to
get in them. Two quick tries from RBS put us ahead and suddenly Ashford looked
very tired but dangerous. The Ashford crowd started throwing a few barbed
comments at the team who responded in the best way, but keeping schtum and
scoring a hatful of tries, and running out winners of the East Kent 7s Plate by
36-21. Next up is Olney 7s near Milton Keynes on 3rd July, let me know if you
want to be involved.
