2005/06 Match Reports

Saturday 11 November 2006 - League Match Kent 3
RBS RFC 10 Edenbridge RFC 55
Tries: Ruocco & Jordan

After the usual difficult week of getting a side out due to non availabilities, non answers and injuries we eventually turned up with 18 players - again due to non turn ups on Saturday.

Thanks to everyone who did turn up and in particular to Chris W who played despite being ill, Moses who played with an injury as we had no other backs and Tim Timmins for playing at hooker for the first time in a number of seasons so we could release Jerry to play at scrum half.

Despite all the changes and the players playing out of position the game started well with the forwards taking the advantage and going over in the first 5 minutes from a rolling maul which saw Andy R score the try.

After that we allowed Edenbridge back in to the game and through some sloppy tackling allowed them to run in three quick tries to take the lead. We cannot and will not blame any particular player we were all at fault for missing tackles and we must take in to the game the tackling some of us practice on a Tuesday We gradually got back in to the game at the end of the first half and another rolling maul saw Joe Jordan score - (I think his first try for the club but not certain)

We turned around at 29-10 down and there was still hope as we had the strong wind at our backs in the 2nd half - unfortunately though they managed to strengthen up their forward effort in the 2nd half and their backs were far stronger when they kept the ball in hand rather than kicking. We also had to make a number of enforced changes due to injury which disrupted the side and this was not helped by many strange refereeing decisions which I in particular took exception too (probably too strongly). We spent much of the 2nd period camped in our own half and were unable to stop their backs running in a number of tries.

I do not want to criticise any of the players who turned out as without them this season there would not be a club - I am very grateful to all those who have been playing particularly those that have joined us this season have very little recent (if any) previous rugby experience and make the effort to get to training every week and turn out on a Saturday - home or away- despite the results - I hope these players do not lose heart and carry on supporting us so we can carry on trying to rebuild the club. We need to keep morale going and get results to improve and we can only do this through training and putting in to practice the training sessions on a Saturday.

It was good to welcome Ken back on Saturday and thank you for filling in at fly half on your return - hope the knee is ok. The overall injury count on Saturday was Andy R (shoulder), Moses (finally gave in to his shoulder injury), Ken (knee) Les (everything) and Phil who als picked up an injury - we do not have a game this Saturday so hopefully everyone will be fit and raring to go on the 25th (away to Medway).

Please can I ask players to respond to the skippers request for availability as soon as you can - we are all busy and do not have time to constantly chase.

See you all at training.

Saturday 15 March 2006- Powergen London Kent Three
RBS RFC 23   King’s College Hospital RFC  17

Tries:  Beavis 2, Black
Penalty Barry 2  Conversion: Barry

A game approached in the right spirit with a strong squad of 18 after a couple of last minute
pull outs.
Kings College came expecting an easy win and started strongly with their forwards dominating
the scrum (my fault - I was playing prop or was a 2nd row as Jerry put it as I was taller than
him whilst in position in the scrum) and their backs running well. As usual we took a little while
to get in to the game and Kings ran in an early try.
Following this we upped our game and started to dominate possession and early up front tackles
saw Kings spill the ball on frequent occasions and following a sustained period of pressure
turnover ball saw the backs create the overlap and James go in for the try to make it 5 all.
Kings then managed to regain control and after a good defensive effort managed to throw a
long pass which Phil very nearly intercepted - however their winger caught the ball and ran in
unopposed under the posts - 5 - 12.
In the past we might have collapsed at this point with Kings running the ball strongly but an
immense defensive effort saw us get back in to the game by firstly slotting a penalty which with
the wind against Stu managed to just get over the bar and then at the end of the first half we
were camped inside their 22 when we managed to put pressure on their scrum which led to them
trying to run the ball out only for Phil this time to intercept the pass and somehow keep those legs
going to score in the corner. Half time 13 - 12.
It was important that we did not go off the boil in the second half - as is our norm. We had done
the hard work by getting the half time lead whilst playing up the slope and in to the wind. We
started the second half well and were able to keep Kings pinned back with some good tactical kicking.
Our lead was extended due to a further penalty leaving us 16 - 12 up. Kings were now desperate not
to lose as their own promotion chances were on the line and they did not want to lose to RBS.
They upped their game and started to use their full back more as a strike runner together with their
forwards. Their scrum did however get weaker (not my doing I am sure) and we were able to slow
their ball down. However after defending well for a long period they did break through our line to score.
With the conversion being missed we were now down 17-16 with the Kings confidence on the increase.
However heads did not drop and despite a good deal of pressure we managed to hold out and with
Kings again trying to spin the ball wide James intercepted on our 22 and outran their defence to score
under the posts which Stu then converted.
At this point there was 6 minutes to go and naturally Kings came at us very strongly. We managed to
secure a number of scrums in our own 22 but were not able to clear our lines and the excellent defence
continued with Kings spilling the ball at crucial moments. Eventually we kicked the ball into touch after
42 minutes (as confirmed by the ref's assessor despite protests from the oppo) for the final whistle and
a much deserved win was enjoyed by all.
This win was the result of a great team effort with everyone playing well. Thanks to Steve, Chris and
John for filling the bench and apologies for not getting you on on this occasion.
We now have 2 second team games left starting with Erith away this weekend and Bexley after Easter
and the away league game to Orpington next week. Training will continue this week and next please let
me know your availability asap for training and for this coming weekend's 2nd team game. Let’s try and
extend the club's unbeaten run which currently stands at four.
Finally a message from Les - we were supposed to be playing Greenwich 2's on club day this year although
they have now been invited along to Orpington for their beer festival and tournament on the same day.
We have been invited as well and have to make an early decision on this. Whilst the Beer Festival is a
good day - club day has traditionally always been held at the club and is an opportunity for players of past
and present to get together and have a few beers - oh and play a bit of rugby.
Please let us know your thoughts on your preference so we can plan the day.
Once again well done to everyone.

Saturday 25th February
Kent Metropolitan – Early Bird League
RBS RFC 2nd XV 50    Bromley RFC 4th XV  29
Tries: Phil Black 2, Giles Flower 2, Odie 1, Steff 1, Neils 1, John English 1.
Conversions:
Giles Flower - 5

A thoroughly enjoyable game. RBS played into a strong wind first half which made progress out of our half difficult, with Steff demonstrating the strength of the wind and the rarely scene art of over head kicks on a number of occasions. Whilst we conceded some early tries we also managed through some strong work from both forwards and backs to make progress into the opposition half. John English was the first of many first half scorers, going over in the right hand corner after well won born by the forwards and good hands in the backs.

There were more scores on both sides in the first half with Giles scoring the pick of the bunch from just inside our half. After beating two players and with only the full back to beat, and with Neils in close support Giles took the greedy option and ran through rather than round the full back.

2nd half gave us the opportunity to play with the wind and after some scrappy play early on Odie ran in a try from just inside their 22 showing a rare turn of pace and highlighting some of the oppositions reluctance to tackle. Unfortunately our tackling was a tad lax in places too and we conceded points that were completely avoidable. That said, we also played some nice rugby with the forwards working hard in the set pieces and at the breakdown to create opportunities for the backs. In general a confidence building result and something to take forward to Park House this week. I'd also like to thank everyone for getting back to me so quickly last week and confirming their availability as it made life very easy.

Cheers

18th February 2006
Powergen London Kent Three League
RBSRFC  7    Foots Cray RFC 28
Scorers Try Burkwood
Con Barry

After another tough week getting a side out we eventually travelled to Foots Cray with 18 players - thanks to Nik Allison and Richard Hanlon for making their debuts - both impressive and hopefully the first of many appearances. Also thanks to Tim Timmins and Pete Ward for turning out at late request and to Richard B for not drinking at the Foots Cray dinner so he could play.
I am grateful to all the players who made the effort after last weeks cancellation - it is important we fulfil all our remaining fixtures.

The game started with the RBS forwards dominating possession and the backs looking dangerous every time they had the ball - we spent much of the first 10 minutes in the oppos 22 but could not convert this in to points. Eventually following a Foots Cray scrum on their 5 metre line Steff charged down the clearing kick and then reached the ball first to score the try which Stu converted.

Foots Cray then did start coming back in to the game and following a period of sustained pressure scored in the corner. Unfortunately this led to their players increasing in confidence and starting to bring their backs more in to the game. All the points were scored in the first half with their fast winger doing most of the damage.

At half time we still did not feel out of it and continued to plug away.

Unfortunately having made the call to replace Jo and Les with Twiggs and Steve Edser we then lost Richard H to a rib injury meaning Nik had to move out to centre with Tim Timmins coming on in the second row - me having to step up to my favourite (!) position of prop - ouch. Having struggled through 10 minutes of trying with their large front row my technique was clearly not good enough and the pressure on Jerry at hooker led to him getting a neck injury (sorry Jerry). Jerry going off so we then had to go uncontested.

The second half was a good game of rugby with both defences holding firm and nobody really looking like scoring.

The final score of 28 - 7 did not reflect the closeness of the match and we should take a lot of positives from this game. We need to be more aggressive in the rucks and mauls possession was turned over too often and we need to get the backs quicker ball to allow Stu and James to make the breaks to give our other backs time to run the ball.

Next week is the 2nd team game away against HSBC 2's which is a game we all enjoy and their will be no need to build ourselves up for it we will be motivated. I am away now for the next 2 weeks so please let Phil, Ken or Steff know your availability asap. Following that is the 2nd team away game to Park House (another local fixture) Lets all please make the effort so we can build ourselves up as a team prior to the next league game away to Greenwich on March 11- now a must win game to avoid finishing bottom.

We hope to have some new players coming down to training on Tuesday so please all make the effort to get to training to support Richard and the Captains in building the squad.

Good luck next week see you on the 4th.

Cheers

14th January 2006
Kent Metropolitan – Early Bird League
RBSRFC 2nd XV 12  Greenwich RFC 2nd XV 24
Scorers Tries O'Sullivan, Lowth
Con O'Sullivan

A game we should have won despite the usual difficulties in getting a side out - thanks to Greenwich, who lent us a prop, we were able to field 15 and also thanks to John Cass for turning up with his kit and running the line.

RBS opened the scoring after early domination from the forwards but then allowed Greenwich back in to the game with 2 tries fo their own.

We then scored an excellent try with good link play between Alex (who had an excellent running game in the centre and even managed to pull a muscle he didn't know he had) and Neils (making his comeback).

In the second half they made a few changes and we could not break them donw further. We then let them in for 2 late tries which saw us lose the game.

We were nto helped by the ref but to be fair this was a second team fixture in a low league so if there are no society refs available we must be grateful to local club men who are prepared to take the abuse on a Saturday afternoon so these fixtures can be fulfilled even though it can be demoralising at times.

Following the withdrawal of Darenth Valley from the league we are now playing Old Beccs in a 2nd team fixture at home this weekend so please make yourselves available.

Kent Metropolitan – Early Bird League
RBSRFC 2nd XV 42 Bexley RFC 3rd XV 19
Scorers tries      English 3, Black 2, O'Sullivan, Giblin and Thomson
Conversion:       Barry

After a difficult week getting a side together thanks to Phil Black, John Cass and John English we ended up with 17 on the day. Also thanks to Jerry for playing out of position at scrum half and Chris Black for playing and for James English for giving in to the persuasion to sub for us. John Cass making yet another appearance on the wing.

From the start the forwards took the game to Bexley with David and Sam particularly strong in going forward and also in disrupting any ball the opposition could get.  From a scrum five meters out Simon picked up from number 8 to set Jerry up to score in the corner. There after strong running from the backs who exploited the open spaces well saw John English run in from the half way line for a well taken try. We then let Bexley back into the game but some good defence kept them out. John then finished off an excellent move where persistence from Sam saw the Bexley full back fumble and then good link play fed John to score. Ken then completed the first half scoring with a well taken try.

In the Second half we again let Bexley back in for an early score and it took us a while to get back into it however eventually Phil on his come back went over this was followed by a further try by John to complete his hat trick and a second for Phil and the highlight of the day apart from John's hat trick was to see the fine figure of Les using his power to crash over under the posts to the biggest roar from the crowd.
(Les’s first try since April 98 – and that was against Bexley 3’s!! ed)

A good win from a thrown together side which combined experience with keen new faces and players helping us out. It was good to see Phil and Chris G return well from injury thanks to Marc Jones for completing the front row and to everyone for turning out.

There is no training next week and training will resume on Tuesday 3rd Jan at 7.15 please make the effort before the league return against Old Williamsonians on the 7th.

It just remains for me to say Thank You for all your efforts in 2005 I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and see you all on the 3rd.

Saturday 10th December – Powergen London Kent Three
RBS RFC 5    King’s College Hospital RFC  14
Try
: Rick Leitch

A game with a bit of heart. Another loss but a game where spirit was on show. Following Richards words from last week this was something much needed for the team. The build-up was not the best with us only having 14 players until Richard agreed to play foregoing a game with Footscray (thanks Richard - hope the drinks afterwards were of some reward!) and us having players scattered around London trying to get to Dulwich on time.
We had 14 at kick-off (just) and started relatively well considering that we were 1 player light for the first 10/15 mins. The game was fairly tightly fought up front with some strong channel running and countering tackling. Kings edged the first half with two tries. One coming from some good sequential phase plays leading to an overlap and one with them breaking through the fringes around the forwards and then some good strong running to break through the backs line too.
With 15 on the field we were competitive throughout the match in all areas although particular note should go to the scrum for knuckling down after being turned over early on to dominating for the majority of the second half. Despite going in down at half time we were still positive having shown that we weren't going to be beaten easily. We came out all guns blazing and took the game to Kings. The scrum was excellent and we were winning the majority of our lineouts. In addition the Stu Barry kicking game was very much on form which helped us out of a few dangerous situations. Some concerted effort and continuous possession led to a great platform from the forwards being worked down the back line to let Rick Leitch score in the corner. Continued pressure from the whole team led to 2 or three similar chances which, had the last passes been made or gone to hand, would have taken us past Kings. We were let off with a few missed penalties and a knock on from Kings when they should have scored but all said we dominated the second half and took a moral victory from that. Despite the 14-5 loss we ended up the happier side with our performance but just need to convert those chances and eek out the victories some of our performances deserve. Thanks to all for turning out and for ensuring that the fighting spirit we need to show more of was there this week.
Hope the post-match drinks went well and look forward to some similar spirit being shown in first team games next week. For those that are around next week for the twos I look forward on building on this week. For the Leitches, hope South Africa treats you well and at least one of you return quickly to the side! For all those of you not around I hope that you have a great Christmas.

Saturday 3rd December – Powergen London Kent Three
RBSRFC 3    Orpington RFC  32
Penalty: Jerry O'Sullivan

The reunion day game saw a hard fought first half but then a trouncing in the second.
Despite conceding 3 points to an early penalty we dominated the first half in terms of territory but admittedly this was down on the whole to the pressure being exerted by the back row of David, Randall and Rick on the Orpington half backs which led to numerous mistakes.
Our downfall for the whole of the game was out inability to win set piece possession. This was down to me in the line out as I could not contend with their very good 2 jumper - sorry lads. The scrum was under pressure for most of the game and in the second half having lost both Les and Sam to injury we had to go uncontested which was probably the only way we were going to see the ball anyway.
Half time was 3 - 3 but Orpington scored with their first move in the second half and their confidence grew. We were unable to contend with their 2 fast runners at full back and outside centre and as a result conceded a number of unanswered tries.
Richard summed it up at then end and whilst I believe we played with a lot of heart in the first half we did let ourselves down in the second. Obviously we had not played for 2 weeks which did not help in terms of fitness and game plan but we must make the effort to get down to training to work together as a ream so our performances can improve.
Our cause was not helped by injuries to David, Sam and a nasty ankle injury to Andy - I hope all recover quickly as we need you.
My biggest disappointment on Saturday was some of the muttering I heard on the field, we are a team and must play as one - we all give up our Saturday afternoons to play rugby for RBS - naturally mistakes will be made and wrong decisions made but there is little to be gained in slagging each other off we must remain positive and work together.
We now have 2 games left before Xmas lets make ourselves available and get strong sides out. Please let me know your availability ASAP so we can card the sides early.
I hope everyone enjoyed their reunion day and I am sorry we could not carve out the victory your support deserved.

Saturday 9th November – Shepherd Neame – Metro Early Bird League
Beccehamians cried-off Friday night
Thanks to all those who made themselves available….

Following the defeat against Old Williamsonians we are now facing a 2 week period with no game due to the opposition cancelling on Saturday and us having to cry off the Cup game at Old Gravesendians due to lack of availability.

Our next game is against Orpington at Lower Sydenham, which is also the reunion game so the mass ranks of supporters (!!!) will be on the side line offering their sober advice (!!!).  As we will not be playing again before this game and I feel this is a game we can win please make the effort to get down to training in order to keep fitness levels up and also to keep us working together as a team - we do not want to hit this game cold after a 2 week lay off - please make the effort on the two Tuesdays for the sake of the club and your team mates.

Please also confirm your availability for the 3rd (Orpington) and 10th (Kings College Hospital) - 1st team games and the 10th (Greenwich 2's) and 17th (Bexley 3's) 2nd team games - please note the 10th is a 2 game weekend and it would be good if we could fulfil - please make a note in your diaries now."

 Thanks

Saturday 12th November  – Powergen Kent 3 League Match
RBS RFC   XX  13 Old Williamsonians RFC   22
Tries:
Thomson, & Burkwood - Pen:   O'Sullivan

After another tough week getting a side out we finally travelled to Rochester with 16 men which included Richard starting at full back and both Randall & Rick agreeing to play in the centres, Ken having been delayed by his dentist!!!!!

A bright start from OW's saw some strong running which eventually led to their strong running skipper going over in the corner. The Bank battled back well with Ken (having arrived) going over for a well taken try under the posts following some good work in the Backs. The pack continued to dominate and following further pressure O'Sullivan slotted the penalty to put us ahead.

Unfortunately OW's hit back well with a further two tries before half time mainly due to our poor defence following penalties awarded against us and we must react quicker to these situations.

In the second half we found it difficult to get out of our own half despite the forwards starting to mix it well up front. They had no defence to our scrum and our line out worked well - however we had no answer to their 7 ft beanpole in the line out - even Wedders and Les could not throw me up that high!!! The second half was a try apiece with Steff going over for the try following a sustained period of pressure.

Our downfall again was our failure to make first up tackles especially after quickly taken penalties and we must work on this.

Thanks to everyone who turned out and again to those who played out of position.

Next week is a return to 2nd team action away to Old Beccs followed by the cup game against Old Gravesendians on the 26th. Both of these are important games for the club so please make yourselves available.

Please do not forget training on Tuesday - please make the effort to be there.

Saturday 5th November
Shepherd Neame – Metro Early Bird League

RBSRFC 2nd XV  12   Orpington RFC 3rd XV  12
Tries: Marc Jones, Ken Thomson
Con: Stu Barry

A game played in great spirit by both sides which was fitting for Les' birthday game.

As usual despite 21 carded on Wednesday we were fishing around on Saturday morning and turned up with 15 - they were 2 short so Steve Edser played for them (Thanks Steve) although unbeknown to me they had 2 new players turn up in the clubhouse so started with 15 - I could not count. John Cass came on after 20 minutes - thanks John and Twiggs turned up to come on at half time following an injury to Marc Jones.

I must thank Steff, Stu and Ken for being our backs representatives and for putting up with 12 forwards and thanks go to Wayne for playing in the centre, David for playing in the centre, Philippe for playing on the wing and Joseph J for starting on the wing.

Having lost the toss we started playing down the hill with the wind behind and made the most of these advantages in terms of possession and position but found it difficult to convert in to points - from Orpington's point of view they had some strong runners who made breaks up the field but our defence held firm. After a period of pressure Marc ran in from about 10 metres out with an excellent angled run which Stu converted.

We continued to pressure and a typical Ken jinking run saw him score our 2nd try. Orpington then had a period of sustained pressure and break away from the back of the maul saw them score under the posts.

Half time 12 - 7 and it was clear we were in for a tough 2nd half. However whilst we were unable to score further - the slope and 12 forwards in the team taking it's toll - our defence held firm until the last play of the game when they crashed through to score under the posts. Sportingly they asked Steve Edser to take the conversion and whilst connecting well it flew just wide of the post.

12 - 12 was a fair result for the game - both sides played in good spirit and everyone remained committed to the end. Thanks to everyone who took part.

Next week sees the return to league action - away to Old Williamsonians - a game we can win - I know it is an International weekend but please make yourselves available if you can and make the effort to get down to training so we can chalk up another win.

Please confirm to me your availability or otherwise ASAP - if you have already let me know no need to confirm.

Regards

Steve

2nd November 2005
Coutts 36 v Lloyds 5

Well I think it is safe to say that the DVD will not be available in the shops....

As we kicked off in torrential rain and the most unpredictable of winds we knew the match was never going to be a classic, from the off the game plan was clear LLoyds had a fly half capable of putting the ball in touch 60 metres down field and were intent on using him, we on the other hand were looking to crash through the middle with the centre pairing of Fishlock and Reah, hit the rucks giving quick ball for the likes of Omonua and Ampomah to attack out wide.

The first half went largely to plan 31-0 up at half time after four nicely taken tries that in the main came through breaks by the centres and support from the likes of Pollard, Neale and Ampomah. The team talk at half time was quiet straight forward "more of the same please" (yes it was an inspiring speech as my first act as captain!). However we seemed to lose a bit of focus in the second half and LLoyds changed their game plan organising their defence and running the ball back at us, but our defence held firm until their fly half kicked the ball over the top and over a line despite scrim-half Rob Cotterill belly flopping onto the ball and sliding two metres and Charles clearly stopping the ball and touching it down a late run by their winger and a pounce on the ball yielded a try as we were preparing for the 22'. Unfortunately the second half saw the match getting very scrappy and our prop had to go off with a broken nose to replaced by David Smith who stepped into the forwards with great ease (how about a career a second row, no thought not!) and both Lloyds and ourselves went down to 14 thanks to some dubious aggressive tactics late in the second half!!

A thanks and welcome to the new boys ..... Dean Banks from Wyvill Rd had a great game at hooker and no one would have envied him the task of throwing in at the lineouts
Craig Burrow had a great game in the 2nd row whilst his undoubted scrummaging ability was some what nullified his presence at rucks and mauls, securing the ball and letting everyone know it was not coming out, was fantastic
Joe Jordan who played well in the first being at every ruck and breakdown early and took one for the team going off at half time.

I would like to thank all those that turned up to play last night despite the weather, the performance in the first half was very strong there were very few dropped passes despite the conditions and it was great start to the season, especially with a very high injury count

However it was disappointing to see that the number of last minute drop outs was very high and I would ask that in future can anyone that is going to drop out let me know by Monday morning so we can restructure the team and get the positions in. Any later in particular on the day is letting your mates in the team down and making hard work for everyone involved......next fixture 23rd November v United Banks - get in the diary now

Men of the Match: Yes that's right I'm sitting on the fence, there were many strong candidates this week with Craig Burrows have a storming game, Tim Neale at Fly Half showing great hands despite some dodgy passing not helping him, but my men of the match are Dave Evans, for being at every break down, supporting the backs and regularly breaking the oppo line and offloading well (he looked very fresh anyone would think he did not have a job!) and Charles who decided to get stuck in and ran aggressively whenever he had the ball and seemed to be enjoying the contact as he tried and succeeded with a few Moari side-steps!

RBSRFC 1st XV   68        Darenth Valley RFC 1st XV   26
Scorers Tries Barry 2, Banks 2, O'Sullivan, Young, Gellion, Rick Leitch, Oosthuizen, Beavis, English, Wichard
Conversions (I think) one each for O'Sullivan, Rick Leitch, Banks, Barry

An excellent result for the club which also saw us show up with a squad of 20 players which included the return from injury of Tom Banks, Wedders, Phil and Randall and  the welcome return of Joseph. In a reshuffled back line of Joseph at fly half, James inside centre and Stu outside centre with Phil at full back and John and Chris on the wings the opposition had no answer to the running lines and support play.

Each time the backs got the ball they were dominant and only some good defence at times from Darenth kept the score down. Whilst the forwards won good ball and David in particular had an excellent game (capped by his first try for the club) it was the excellent understanding of the backs which won this game. Stu went over for 2 tries from outside centre both created off good breaks and Tom Banks came on for Phil in the second half and ran in 2 great tries from distance. John also got his first score for the club having been fed by the No 8 off the back off a scrum. Youngie scored a try under the posts after supporting Joseph in a run the length of the field and Jerry ran in from distance (had to mention that one as he would not let us tell everyone it was still 0-0 at each kick off.

If we can keep the backs playing as they were it is down to us up front to become more aggressive and win good second phase ball to ensure we make the most of the talent we have.

Thanks to everyone who turned out this week - a much better week for the club with 16 at training and a squad of 20 for the game - it was also easy carding the side this week the tactic of not ringing anybody seemed to work - you all phoned me!!!!!!!!.

Seriously we can hopefully build from here in the league but it is down to us all to keep turning up to training and being available on a Saturday - the more we play together the better it will get - and the penalty move might even work (those that were there know what I mean!!!!)

Next week it is a return to 2nd team action away to Orpington - don't forget this is Les' 40th Birthday game so please make yourselves available for a good day.

Cheers

After a night mare week trying to get a side out thanks to James B, Phil and Steff we managed to have a squad of 17 including James brother and 2 friends plus Phil's brother and Ben Shanahan making a comeback.

In addition Simon, Philippe and David all made their debuts in a new back row combination.

As usual despite exerting early pressure we were unable to convert this in to points and on Park House' first attack they eventually broke through a good defence to score a try which was converted. As the match went on our mainly South African back line started to dominate both in defence and attack so much so that Park House resorted to kicking away all their possession. From the final play of the fist half Warren at fly half combined well with the Beavis brothers to put Barry away on the wing to score - much to the delight of the noisy South African contingent on the side lines.

The second half saw some excellent running from the Back row combining with the three quarters - James in particular was in good form scoring two tries and going close on many other occasions. Chris Wichard had what I thought was his best game for the club - putting in some good tackles and capped it off with a splendid try after going outside two of their defenders to score in the corner - he then nearly converted with a drop kick from the side line.

Well done to Phillipe and David who fitted in to the team well despite not having met many of us before and Simon who played at 8 and provided a steadying influence. The only down side was an injury to Warren in the last 15 minutes after a heavy tackle from their full back left him with a dislocated shoulder - hopefully he will recover soon and come and join us again.

Thanks to everyone who turned out - we need ongoing commitment from everybody to help build the club and whilst we do not have enough players to fill 2 teams every week we need players to make themselves available so we can give everybody a chance in the club to play, especially in these 2nd team fixtures,  so we can keep players at the club - if we do not they are going to walk away to play regular rugby elsewhere - after the efforts of a few to get these new players down we must not let this happen.

Don't forget it is a league game again this week - our first away trip, to Edenbridge, selection will be after training in Tuesday night so please ensure:

            1) you are at training and
            2) you have let me know your availability by then.

Cheers

Steve

Coutts wins World Corporate Games 7's title.
In a 2 day competition in Zagreb last weekend Coutts beat off the opposition of 11 other
teams from various countries to win the World Corporate Games.

In a competition consisting of 2 groups of 6 Coutts were unbeaten in the Group stages,
although some games were a little close for comfort before beating T Mobile in the
final 75 - 0 in what was their best display of the games.

Teams taking part consisted of HBOS, Glaxo, Coca Cola, T Mobile, Bank of Ireland,
Canterbury of NZ, KPMG, McDonalds and Sony.

An excellent result for Coutts rugby and well done to all those that took part including
their non playing Team Manager - a natural sevens player!!!!

A great deal of celebrating did take place!!

Saturday 8th October – Powergen Kent League Three

RBS RFC  0  Snowdon CW RFC  21
A disappointing result from a game which the Bank dominated from the first whistle.
All the pre-match build up about how strong their forwards were served to fire the pack up
in the set piece with us claiming many scrums against the head and also taking all line out
ball theirs and ours. We were unable to convert early pressure into points and on Snowdon's
first venture in to our half our defence held out for a considerable time before a couple of
missed tackles led to a score under the posts.
The Bank continued to dominate thereafter and won a penalty on our line. A poor decision
from me, electing to kick at goal, rather than take a scrum which we were dominating led
to us failing to convert this.  Snowdon's second try came from an interception in the centre
after we were threatening to break through and again they scored under the posts: 14 – 0 at
half time.
A  half time we were all convinced we would still win the game (and indeed should  have) -
Snowdon did up their game in the second half but we still managed to secure plenty of
possession but were unable to break down what was a very good mid field defence. We were
not able to make the ground through rolling mauls in the second half which had proved
successful up to a point in the first half (despite the referees interpretation of the truck and
trailer rule).
A well worked move half way through the second half saw Snowdon again score under the
posts and we were unable to respond.
Whilst our set piece possession was very good on Saturday we were trying to run everything
off first phase possession and did not change the game plan enough to break down their
defence (this is my fault as I should have called  it) we need runners from the forwards at
the right time to tie in the oppos back row - this is something we will need to work on at
training.
There were some positives to take from the game - it was pleasing the amount if possession
we did win both our own and theirs and our defence on the whole was very good - only the
first try was really preventable. It was also pleasing that we were able to get 19 players down
(despite a number of unavailabilities) and apologies to Gary Casey as we could not get him on.
Rick again had an excellent game in the back row, thanks to Henry for filling in at Fly half and
to Tom Fisher for making his come back at short notice to help us out.
It is a second team game this weekend - home to Park House 3's which saw two very good
games last season - please make yourselves available so we can build some confidence in the
club.
Make the effort to get to training on Tuesday - we have some new faces coming down so lets
show that we are a good club to play for by supporting the captains and the coach on a Tuesday
night.
Cheers

Saturday 1st October – Powergen Kent League Three

RBS RFC 10  Footscray RFC  38
Scorers:  Stu Barry Penalty & Conversion, Eroy Alexis try

A tough game where we played well but were outplayed in a couple of areas in the first 20 minutes.

We turned up with a strong squad with 5 subs (not bad considering we are only allowed to use 3 + a front row replacement). Unfortunately despite this and a good warm-up we fell behind to an early try and were put under continuous pressure by a strong pack. The key to their superiority in this part of the game was the upper hand in the pack and a very quick and strong
winger.

We turned round at 26-3 after playing the second quarter with a bit more belief. The second half was better for us although it was still lost 12-7. There was some good linking play between backs and forwards going forward although all too often we were on the back foot.

There was some good individual play notably by Alex, Tom and Rick in the back row and some strong running by some of the backs (Tom Banks, James and Chris) but all too often we looked as if we weren't used to playing together and were not playing as a team. We need to train more as a team and to concentrate more on some of the basics; our first-up tackling, our retention on taking the ball into contact, and ensuring that we calm down and don't panic in
possession.

Best wishes to both Jerry, Les and Chris Gimpel who all picked up injuries (I believe Steve Edser
accompanied the latter to casualty for 3 odd hours so thank you!).

Please make the effort to come to training and make yourselves available for this Saturday. If you are available please contact one of the captains to let them know.

 Cheers

24th  September – Metro Early Bird League match

RBSRFC 2nd XV 43    Old Dunstonians 7ths  7
Scorers:  James Bevis 2, Tom Banks 2, Randall Leitch, Rick Leitch, Alex Lowth

Conversions: Jerry O'Sullivan 4

After an arduous week of trying to get a side out (well done Ken for all your efforts) we
eventually fielded 15 players and a sub and special thanks must got to Twiggs (for
coming out of retirement yet again and for playing in the front row - hope the abuse was
not too bad when you got home) to Tom Banks for answering an SOS an hour before the
game (going home and getting his kit and turning up for kick off) and to Tim Timmins
and John Cass for being on the bench - the former despite injury and the latter even
though he knew nothing about it.

Despite all the problems the side we fielded was a strong team and we gave Rick the
opportunity to play in the Back row alongside Randall at No 8 with Tim Kirby playing in
the blind side. This formula worked extremely well with Tim Setting up Rick for his try
after good play between the brothers and Randall not to be outdone crashing over for a
try with about 5 of their players hanging off him following a quickly taken penalty.

As always we started slowly which was mainly due to us only getting up to 15 players 5
minutes before kick off and them having been out warming up for some time. However
we managed to withstand the early pressure put on us up front and then following a
break out from our own 22 good play from the backs led to Alex finishing the move off
with a typical run to score the try.

The rest of the first half saw us dominate possession with some excellent interplay and
support particularly between the back row and the backs leading to some well taken
tries following good rugby. James Bevis scored 2 - I believe his first for the club
something we must remember in the club house in the near future!!!!!

Tom Banks ran in 2 good tries from full back - the first putting their full back out of the
game and the second a long distance run to score in the corner - good to see John
English up there in support.

In the second half we did let OD's back in to the game a little and went to sleep for their
try with poor defence when we were within 7 minutes of closing them out. This was a
good confidence booster for all involved and I hope everyone (including the supporters) enjoyed the game.

As everyone knows we are trying to build the club and their are a number of recruitment
initiatives underway. However we are also reliant on existing club members to make
themselves available to keep the side going and to encourage the new players. Please try
to make yourselves available when you say you are and also return phone calls and
eMails as soon as possible to make the Captains' lives easier. I know some circumstances
are unavoidable but it is not easy to cover players dropping out the day before or on the
day of the game - we need your commitment early in the week so we know we can filed
a team. Please also be mindful we are operating with a relatively modest number of
players and we will have to ask you to play out of position from time to time and we do
need players to fill the crucial positions on the park.

A date for your diary is Saturday 8 October - we need to try to field 2 sides - so if you
have not played this year yet but are thinking about it or just want to play please mark
your diaries out now and make the effort to get down we need you for this one.

Next week is the league game against Footscray - lets carry on our winning start to the
season and win this one for Richard - Again please let us know your availability early this
week so we can card the side.

Finally on this weekend thanks to Simon Lawson for agreeing to come along and referee
the game – I and most of the players thought he had an excellent game and hopefully our
paths will cross again soon.

10 September 2005

RBSRFC 14 Greenwich 12

Try Rick Leitch, 3 Penalties to Stu Barry
Good performance for the first game of the season.
Not a particularly pretty game from either side, the Bank managed to hold the early
dominance of the Greenwich forwards in the lineout and scrum and then following a
lineout steal, good interplay saw Rick evade three players to score in the corner.
This was followed by a penalty from Stuart in front of the posts which gave us a 8-0 lead.
As is usual, we then took our collective foot of the pedal and saw Greenwich score two
dubious tries to take a lead of 12-8 at half time.
The second half saw the bank gradually take control up front, but poor decision making
and handling errors stopped us scoring.  Taking the safe option, we slotted a penalty with
15 minutes to go and then despite losing Pete Young with a dislocated finger, we continued
to dominate but could not score.  Eventually from another lineout steal in their 22, we
drove for the line and following a short period of play, we were awarded a penalty in front
of the posts in the last play of the match, giving a final score of 14-12.
Moments of individual good play, but we must start to work as a team and we can do that
by getting down to Training on a Tuesday.
Well done to everyone involved and thanks to the Supporters who came down.
